Adyen, the global financial technology platform of choice for leading businesses, enables its Japanese merchants to seamlessly and securely accept in-person contactless payments with Tap to Pay on iPhone. By partnering with NewStore for the launch, outdoor and winter sports company Burton can now accept contactless payments using only an iPhone and a supporting iOS app.

Tap to Pay on iPhone accepts all forms of contactless payments including contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, and other digital wallets, using only an iPhone and a supporting iOS app— no additional hardware or payment terminal needed. At checkout, the merchant will simply prompt the customer to hold their contactless payment method near the merchant’s iPhone, and the payment will be securely completed using NFC technology.

Tap to Pay on iPhone uses the built-in features of iPhone to keep the business’ and customers’ data private and secure. When a payment is processed, Apple doesn’t store card numbers or transaction information on the device or on Apple servers.

Tap to Pay on iPhone will enable Adyen’s customers to stay at the forefront of innovation by:

  • Simplifying in-person payments by removing the dependence on additional payment hardware to accept contactless transactions.

  • Getting up and running quickly with installation and onboarding, allowing businesses to scale up their payment operation.

  • Providing safe and fast checkout experiences that increase mobility on location and on the go.

  • Allowing for a convenient, private and secure way to pay for customers since transactions are encrypted and payment data is protected by the same technology that makes Apple Pay private and secure.

Norihiko Seki, Burton's Retail Manager, said, "We are pleased to be one of the first major retailers to introduce Tap to Pay on iPhone in Japan. By making the checkout experience more accessible for our team and our customers, we can identify better areas where we need to spend more time and areas where we can simplify the customer service experience. Our team members can assist customers anywhere on the floor and complete the checkout process without wasting valuable customer time."

“We are thrilled to be bringing Tap to Pay on iPhone to Japanese merchants," said Warren Hayashi, President of Adyen Asia Pacific. “This represents a significant step forward in the evolution of digital payments, offering Japanese merchants a fast, secure, and convenient way to make transactions. We believe this technology will revolutionize the payments landscape and help retailers transform the in-store shopping experience.”

Tap to Pay on iPhone enables Adyen's customers to use a payment solution that is easy to set up and use. Merchants will be able to unlock contactless payment acceptance through a supporting iOS app on an iPhone XS or later running the latest version of iOS.
